MEREWIF

Merewif is a unique collection of handmade jewelry that is heavily inspired by the alchemistic elements of the sea. The word ‘Merewif’, pronounced meer-wife, comes from an Old English term for mermaid and sea witch. Every piece is designed by Savannah in her hometown on the Southeast coast of North Carolina and meticulously handcrafted in the United States. Savannah’s love for the ocean is apparent throughout her collection as many pieces are made from casts of starfish, seahorses and shark teeth. The jewelry has a distinctively raw, handmade quality that makes you fall instantly in love with it. Merewif is truly a breath of fresh air.

TJF: How did Merewif come about?

SW: After working as a footwear designer in New York and Los Angeles for several years, I moved back to my hometown on the coast of North Carolina. With little to no jobs in my field, I decided that I would start a business where I could create something with my own two hands. I had previously taken a silversmithing class and really took to the tactile process of jewelry making, thus became Merewif.

TJF: How would you describe your customer?

SW: My customer is ageless and has an appreciation for nostalgia and surprise in design.

TJF: What is the inspiration behind your designs?

SW: The name Merewif translates to Mermaid or Sea Witch in Old English. The inspiration is always tied back to the sea, from how the moon affects the tides to the organic shapes of waves to cast relics like coral and shark teeth.

TJF: Where do you find inspiration?

SW: I find most of my inspiration in nature, especially texture.

TJF: Does your collection reflect the latest trends?

SW: I try to make Merewif timeless, but I am definitely taking note of what is trending. For example, I love chokers right now which is a current trend.

TJF: What are your favourite pieces?

SW: I love the Selene choker and Io necklace.

TJF: How would you describe your personal style?

SW: Definitely laid back, with an ode to the 70’s.

TJF: Who’s your muse?

SW: Jane Birkin meets Freja Beha Erichsen

TJF: Is there a quote or saying that you live by?

SW: Not really! I like this one though, in relation to Merewif: The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” -Jacques Yves Cousteau

TJF: What’s your favourite city in the world?

SW: Big Sur, California

TJF: What’s your favourite flower?

SW: Hydrangea or sunflower

TJF: What’s the best part about being a designer? And the worst?

SW: Coming up with new collections! The worst: accounting.

TJF: If you weren’t a jewelry designer, what would you most likely be?

SW: Some other type of designer. Maybe a graphic designer or interior designer.
